Do Khyentse Yeshe Dorje (1800-1866) was a significant figure in Tibetan Buddhism, particularly in the Nyingma tradition. He is renowned as a tertön, meaning a discoverer of spiritual treasures or terma, which are hidden teachings said to be concealed by Padmasambhava and other masters for future generations.

Born in the Kham region of Eastern Tibet, Yeshe Dorje was recognized as an incarnation of Jigme Lingpa, a prominent 18th-century Nyingma lama and a previous discoverer of terma. His life was marked by a...well, scholarly books characterized him as an exponent of "crazy wisdom." We would say bonkers to the nth degree.

Yeshe Dorje traveled extensively throughout Tibet, teaching and revealing terma. He was known for his mastery of Dzogchen, the highest and most esoteric practice in Tibetan Buddhism. Also: swordfighting and reviving ewes after he has eaten them.

He had numerous disciples, and his influence extended beyond the Nyingma school, impacting other Tibetan Buddhist traditions as well. His revealed termas continue to be practiced and are considered vital contributions to the Nyingma lineage.
